Over the past few weeks we have been learning all about multiplication in Year 1!
Year 1 is when the children first start to look at multiplication and what this means. Children start to look at the concept of equal groups and how these equal groups make a ‘total’ number. Being able to group objects or images into ‘equal groups’ is a really important skill which we they build upon as they move throughout the school.
This week we have been using the cubes and visual representations to show our understanding. Below you can see an example from our Maths Journal of this – using the sentence ‘__ groups of ___.’ You can also see some pictures of us playing ‘equal rows or not equal rows’ with our partners. In this game we had to make equal groups and show them in ‘rows’ – sometimes we would try to trick our partners by making rows that were not equal to make sure they were looking carefully!!!
We have also been drawing upon our knowledge of counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s as part of our multiplication learning. Bringing these concepts together supports children to apply their understanding in different concepts and link ideas.
A huge well done to everyone this week – you have been really resilient this week!!
Well done Year 1. I am proud of you!
