Wow Year 5, what a fabulous World Book Week thinking about amazing books and ourselves as readers!  We do love reading in Year 5, we love picture books, fiction novels, non-fiction information books…you name it, we’ll read it!  Have a look at the books we are reading at the minute, what a collection!

We started the week by Buzzing some of our favourite books, have a look…. Any you would like to read?!

We then had our first Speed Book Browsing session where we rotated around the class, spending 2 minutes with each book to see if we would like to read it or not, then record our thoughts and save the title for later!  It was a great way to explore some new books we had not seen or thought about reading before!

We have also enjoyed a brilliant visit from Simon Philip, author of the amazing ‘I really want…’ series, ‘Fred the Wizard…’ series and many other awesome books.  It was great for him to meet Lenni-Jay and Florence, our original Cracking Good Read stars who shared ‘I really want that cake’ and introduced Simon to our Bookflix scheme 2 years ago!  He was very funny, read us a great story warning us of the dangers of sneezing and talked to us about writing, becoming an author, following our dreams and of course…reading!  We were very impressed with everyones thoughtful and brilliant questions after the session, really inciteful thinking, well done Year 5!

Following this, we had a think about what makes us readers, what good readers do and we had a look at Daniel Pennac’s ‘Rights Of the Reader’ to think about all the things we have a Right to do as readers!  Have a look at our creative posters showcasing what makes us amazing readers at Southill School!  Brilliant resourceful thinking Year 5!

We finished the week with an online event with the author Dan Freedman talking to us about his inspirations and experiences of becoming an author.  What a fantastic opportunity for us as readers to see how we could be authors to influence other readers!
