Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated.
The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) is #BreaktheBias and it has encouraged me to reflect on what we do every day at Southill Primary to ensure that children are treated equally and fairly.
- We actively promote a culture of inclusivity and teach our pupils how to challenge stereotypes and discrimination.
- Through our work on Awesome Aspirations we encourage all children to dream of their future career and we help them to know what they have to do to get there.
- In our PSHE work we learn about how to treat each other with kindness, respect and tolerance.
- We teach children about appropriate behaviours and boundaries, staying safe online and what to do if they feel unsure or worried about something they have done or that has happened to them.
Individually, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts and actions – all day, every day. We can break the bias in our communities. We can break the bias in our workplaces. We can break the bias in our schools, colleges and universities. Together, we can all break the bias – on International Women’s Day and beyond.
This morning I visited classes to briefly discuss IWD and explain the #BreaktheBias pose. I invited staff and children to strike the pose if they wanted to show solidarity and help to forge a more inclusive world.
Together we can work towards a better world. Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.
