A wild and windy day so Forest School session 7 … indoors!

The wind has not stopped howling today, but it didn’t stop us having another fantastic  indoor Forest School session.  Nestled in the woodland backdrop of the library, we managed some tool work, crafts, tree top trumps and a good old game of conkers – all indoors!

First up was learning how to tie some compilated knots to create a survival bracelet – just like Bear Grylls wears!  How amazing is that?!  There was lots of focus, listening, perseverance and determination with orange paracord going over, under and through the rabbit hole.  At times, it felt like were were knitting a jumper!   It was so fantastic to see children helping others and communicating effectively  to master the tricky knots.

Pinecones, sticks, wooden disks were on offer for crafting and various items made – this was completely child led.

We learnt how to use a plan drill to make a hole in a conker and then we were taught the rules of playing conkers.  I think there is going to be a mighty competition next week especially as we now know that a victorious coker assumes the score of all its victim’s precedent foes!  Everyone’s eyes lit up when this rule was talked about!!

What a wonderful proud bunch the Forest Schoolers are!   And so they should be.

We finished off with a lovely poem about an autumn leaf letting go from its tree, not worrying where it might land and being lost in the magic of flying.   It was not only very relevant to a lot of leaves today but a thoughtful lesson about living in the now and trying not to worry about the future.

Watch this space for conkers and cooking next week.
