As part of Southill Science Day we did lots of exciting activities in Year 2 to learn about movement.
Firstly, we discussed whether any of us have ever broken a bone – there were a few! We also talked about names of bones. The children knew some names already!
Next, we met Miss Knight’s skeleton friend Boris. As a class, we helped Miss Knight to label Boris’s bones – the skull, ribs, sternum, spine, pelvis, femur and tibia. We then cut out and stuck labels onto our own skeleton pictures.
After that, we looked at some different bones and skulls that we have borrowed from All Saints school. We handled them carefully as they were very delicate. Some of the skulls still contained teeth!
We also discussed the difference between human bones and bird bones. We looked at pictures of the inside of these bones and learnt that bird bones contain lots of air pockets. This makes the bones light, and therefore it is easier for birds to fly.
We then did different activities with Miss England in Year 1 and Mrs Puddick in Reception. We have learnt so much about movement today. Well done, Year 2!
Isobel really enjoyed this session and has told me all about the Real dolphin skull she saw!
I really enjoyed looking at the bones and labelling Boris!
