In Maths this week, we began our ‘Mass and Capacity’ unit and started off by looking at scales and refreshing their memory, from what they learned in Year 2, about measuring mass in grams and kilograms. We then began looking at equivalent masses and had a go at making the scales balance. We found out that the mass of an object must be equal on both sides to make it balance. We also proved that when scales are unbalanced the heaviest object will be weighed down towards the bottom and the lightest object will stay up in the air. Finally, we looked at comparing different masses where the children had to use the units of measure (g and kg) to work out which objects were heavier or lighter. Knowing that kilograms are heavier than grams helped them to do this, but also learning that 1000g is equivalent to 1kg helped them to recognise when objects had an equal mass.
