Spellings
This week’s words to learn are:

peculiar

particular

ordinary

opposite

often

Parents: all words are selected from the age-appropriate National Curriculum lists, these are words your child has to know by the end of Year 4.  Children are being taught strategies for learning spellings as part of their work at school. Use all the strategies to help learn how to spell a word that we have learnt. 1. Look Cover Write Check 2. Bubble writing 3. Draw the shape of the word. 4. The pyramid’. Ask your child to show you how these work. Please encourage them to practice at home during the week, and carry out an occasional test to prepare them for Friday morning.

EXTRA CHALLENGE: this week I reminded the children of the rules to make a regular verb into the past tense (-ed)

If the verb ends in ‘e’ then just add a ‘d’ …. eg like …. liked

If the verb ends in a consonant and a ‘y’ then  change the ‘y’ to an ‘i’ and add ‘ed’ ….. eg   fry … fried

If the verb ends in a vowel and a ‘y’ then  just add ‘ed’ ….. eg   play …. played

If the verb ends in a consonant- vowel- consonant CVC .. then double the last consonant and add ‘ed’ … eg stop …. stopped

If you want to become a more accurate speller, practice these rules. Bring what you have done into show me.

This week’s times tables to learn are:

7 x

We will test the children up to 12 times 7.

On Friday after school, please ask your child their score.
