Yesterday, Year 3 learnt how to use personification in their writing, for the very first time. I anticipated this to be a tricky task for some, however I was completely blown away by how quickly ALL of the children grasped the concept that personification is ‘giving inanimate objects human features’!
After a super start, we looked at the famous balcony scene between Romeo and Juliet and agreed that this was indeed a positive part of the story and agreed this would be a great opportunity to practise using personification in our own writing. The children began by listing inanimate objects that could be in the setting such as; the balcony, flowers, the moon, the sky, trees, grass and stars. They then used ‘positive’ verbs such as; smiled, giggled and danced to bring their objects ‘to life’. To finish, the children used their initial ideas to then write a whole paragraph to describe the setting.
I throughly enjoyed reading everyone’s work and 4 children even made it on to our class WOW WALL!

George was very proud of his writing this week and told us all about personification. We practised at home using objects in his bedroom – “the wardrobe stood in the bedroom, the curtains waved in the wind and the rocking chair danced back and forth!” 😀
