Book Week began with a BANG!
Well what an action-packed day to kick-start Book Week here in Year 4. We began by doing seven mini Book Talks where the children listened to the opening line in seven different books and then had to explain whether or not they would read the book purely based on this first sentence. Here are the books and the first sentence…
Danny the Champion of the World – ‘When I was four months old, my mother died suddenly and my father was left to look after me all by himself.‘
A Series of Unfortunate Events – ‘If you are interested in stories with happy endings, you would be better off reading another book.’
Kensuke’s Kingdom – ‘I disappeared on the night before my twelfth birthday.’
Count Karlstein – ‘Peter crouched over the fire, stirring the embers so that the sparks swarmed up like imps on the rocky walls of hell.’
The Teacher’s Funeral – ‘If your teacher has to die, August isn’t a bad time of year for it.’
The Colossus Rises – ‘On the morning I was scheduled to die, a large barefoot man with a bushy red bear waddled past my house.’
The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle – ‘Not every thirteen-year-old girl is accused of murder, brought to trial and found guilty.’
It was great hearing children discuss with their partner whether or not it would be a book they would choose to pick up and read and why. The children also did a fantastic job at using conjunctions to explain whether they would choose to read the story.
In writing, we focused on two characters from The Land of Roar (recently crowned Southill’s all-time favourite book). The children were required to write a character profile about either Win or Crowky from the book and my word did they do a fantastic job! They described the character’s in tremendous depth and produced some excellent pieces of writing.
In the afternoon, the children received their free book to celebrate ‘World Book Day’ this week and they took 10-minutes out of the school day in order to begin reading it. It is safe to say that they are really happy with their choices!
