Yesterday afternoon Years 5 and 6 were visited by Mel from Space Youth Project to talk to about gender diversity and sexual orientation. This was a fantastic opportunity for the children to discuss and learn the different ways people identify and live their lives.
Mel started the session by sharing some lovely stories to help the children understand the challenges some people may face when they identify with a different gender. We are really proud of the children’s empathy, reflective thinking and discussion following the stories. This was highlighted again when Mel shared some videos with people’s first hand accounts of their own experiences. We also engaged in some interactive games and chats which prompted thoughtful discussions.
We would like to thank Mel for creating a calm, respectful and safe environment in which to explore and discuss these topics. The children responded positively and have come way with a open understanding of difference and diversity in our world.
