Short Burst Writing

It was great seeing the children back at school filled with enthusiasm and energy ready to begin our summer term. Our English lesson today focused on building suspense in our writing. The children reflected on our learning before the Easter holidays and successfully identified the following writing tools that can be used to build suspense:

  • empty words
  • setting description
  • short sentences
  • rhetorical questions
  • empty words
  • cliffhangers
  • sudden sounds

Our stimulus for today focused on the epic race between Niki Lauda and James Hunt during the 1976 Grand Prix. The two fierce rivals battled it out all season on the track until disaster struck. Lauda lost control of his Ferrari which resulted in him colliding with the barrier and his car burst into flames. We watched the action unfold in a video clip and the children then wrote about what they saw in their writing books. It was great seeing the children being resourceful and using the suspense toolkit in order to produce an excellent piece of writing.

Well done, Year 4.
