Down on the farm with Year 5

Gold Hill organic farm near Blandford was the destination for our Year 5 townies  as they became countryside folk for the day. We travelled to the farm to help us with our project work and were keen to learn all about organic farming and our diverse natural environment.

We were led by the fabulous farming foursome of Sandra, Jo, Pip and Doug (which is a great farming name!) as we investigated different aspects of the farm: vegetable growing, soil, poly-tunnels and hedgerows. We even tasted some vegetables directly from the ground – which produced varying reactions, as all parents can imagine. We even had some fresh vegetables picked and prepared to accompany our lunch – delicious!

During the afternoon we played a game in the field to help us understand how trees grow and how woodland can be affected by invasive predators. We explored the woodland a little more – some of our group even claiming to see some deer – before boarding the coach back to school. A splendid day on the farm – and we had learnt a lot!

Thanks to everyone at Gold Hill for making us feel so welcome and showing us round. We loved it!
