Finding fractions!

This week in maths we have been focusing on fractions. The children have been learning how to find a half and a quarter of shapes and amounts. Today, we explored quarters by folding paper shapes in to four equal parts. This required a lot of different fine motor skills as well as the mathematical understanding of a quarter. The children all did a fantastic job after initially finding it difficult. Lots of children began by folding their shape four times, but soon figured out that this resulted in too many parts. It was great to see the children over coming these problems and persevering until they got the desired outcome.

The children were free to choose which shapes to explore and found that some couldn’t be folded into quarters easily. They then took it upon themselves to collectively sort their shapes into those which could be folded into quarters and those that could not. Brilliant maths, Year 1! Well done!
