Forest School Session 7 Trust, Communication and Fire!

Today, the sun shone, and we made fire!  What a great afternoon to be alive!

First up though, we build on our trust and communication skills by guiding our friends around whilst they were blindfolded.  It is a very strange sensation being totally dependant on others to help us around but we found we tuned in to our other senses more.  We used our ears to listen to each other and noises such as clapping to help guide us.  Our sense of touch was teased by feeling tree trunks and other tactile natural objects around the Forest School site and also we felt more aware of our feet and where we were placing them.  It was a great activity to build relationships and tune into our senses more.  We even had a go being guide over some of the trim trail which included jumping and climbing.  There was excellent teamwork.

We then learnt how to the use the flint and steels to light cotton wool.  This is a tricky task and it an take a long time to master.  The Year 3s had already learnt this skill at Leeson House and were keen to help share their knowledge.  It was really lovely to seem them coaching others who were struggling.  It was also lovely to hear everyone being so complementary and supportive of one another.    The resilience and determination paid off as squeals of excitement shared the children’s success story of making fire!

God’s eyes were continued, the muddy kitchen was open serving a great number of delicious delicacies, tag was played and a den was built, which was way easier that last time when the rain was lashing down and then we were interrupted and needed to evacuate due to the lightening!

Next week, as requested by the Forest Schooler, the challenge is to learn about collecting firewood, starting a fire and then toasting some marshmallows.  We can’t wait!
