The Brilliance of Book Talk

The Brilliance of Book Talk

In Year 5, we absolutely love Book Talk! For those who might not know, Book Talk is an engaging activity where we dive into the pages of a particular book, discuss it, and hopefully inspire children to pick it up and read it themselves. These sessions not only spark a love for reading but also help children develop their oracy skills as they form opinions and discuss the story. Additionally, Book Talk sharpens their ability to solve comprehension challenges effectively.

Today, I had a truly heartwarming moment. I asked the class whether any of them had ever picked up a book suggested during Book Talk, read it, and passed the accompanying book quiz. To my delight, a sea of hands shot up! The children enthusiastically shared the many books they’ve been introduced to and enjoyed thanks to our Book Talk sessions.

Here are the list of books we have already explored since the start of Year 5:

-Crater Lake by Jennifer Killick

-The Vanquishers by Kalynn Baryon

-When the Sky Falls by Phil Earle

-Which Way to Anywhere by Cressida Cowell

-Scribbleboy by Philip Ridley

-The Nowhere Emporium by Ross McKenzie

-The Longest Night of Charlie Noon by Christopher Edge

-The Clockwork Conspiracy by Sam Sedgman

-The Last Tree by Luke Adam Hawker

-The Girl of Ink and Stars by Kiran Millwood Hargrave

-When the Mountains Roared by Jess Butterworth

-The Last Bear by Hannah Gold

-The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Pictured on this blog are just a few of the children who felt so inspired by Book Talk that they eagerly grabbed a copy of the book to read the rest of it.

I wonder what books we will be talking about next…
