Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
This afternoon, ten Year Six children proudly represented Southill Primary School at a Jiu-Jitsu festival. The event began with the children learning the importance of respecting their opponent through a bow and handshake. They were then introduced to various moves, both in and out of holds, which helped them develop their core strength and mat skills. We also learned that Jiu-Jitsu is the art of controlling your opponent using grappling and pinning techniques.
After mastering some key skills and movements, the children stepped into the ring to face off against different opponents. They performed incredibly well, showcasing an impressive standard throughout.
What I am most proud of is how wholeheartedly the children embraced the experience—they literally threw themselves into it! They competed magnificently, partnered with children from other schools, and consistently demonstrated respect for their opponents. It was a fantastic afternoon, and I hope some of them will consider returning to the BJJ Triton Club to continue their journey (sessions are held on Mondays at 5 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m.).
A huge thank you goes to Mr. Blatchley and Mrs. Wallis for kindly transporting the children to and from the Triton. We are also very grateful to the Jiu-Jitsu experts who kept the children safe, engaged, and motivated throughout the afternoon. Lastly, thank you to the ten children who were absolutely sensational from start to finish.
Well done, Southill—you were magnificent!
