London – Day 2

Wow, what an amazing day! After a surprisingly good night’s sleep and a huge, delicious breakfast at the YHA, we headed outside to a crisp, sunny day in Central London. We took in the amazing sights as we walked over the Millennium Bridge on our way to the Globe Theatre.

At the Globe, we were greeted by Tom, an actor who works for the theatre. He gave us a very informative and entertaining tour of the place – we learnt that the audience members who couldn’t afford seats and had to stand were called the ‘Penny Stinkards’, and that the globe is actually designed to represent the earth and the heavens! As well as many other fascinating facts of course. After that, we had a really fun and active acting workshop centred around Twelfth Night, which will really help the class get into character in the final countdown to the big performance.

Next it was time for a bright and breezy riverside walk, eastbound towards the Tower of London. We spotted so many famous buildings along the way, and sat on the Embankment to eat lunch. When we got the Tower of London, we went straight into our ‘Crime and Punishment’ tour, where Lady Catherine Grey herself showed us a real prison cell, and taught us all about the amazing story of John Gerrard, and how he eventually escaped!

We were then free to explore the grounds, so we went into The White Tower and looked at the spectacular array of historical armaments on display. All of these huge suits of armour, swords, and shields were actually worn and used in battle by the kings of centuries past! Then, the main event… the priceless, iconic and highly symbolic crown jewels. They were very impressive indeed.

By that time we were worn out and very much ready for Pizza Express, which was delicious. Everyone left full up and happy. We walked back along the Embankment, this time surrounded by the bright city lights, and stopped at a souvenir shop. You’ll be glad to know that all of your children will be bringing home some high quality merchandise.

Everyone is now settling into bed, and we’re hoping for another good night of sleep before another big day tomorrow.
