I wanted to share some important updates regarding the government’s new guidance on school uniforms and what these changes mean for you and your child at Southill Primary. Rest assured, there aren’t any major changes!
What’s Changing?
The Department for Education (DfE) has issued new statutory guidance aimed at making school uniforms more affordable and accessible for all families. The main focus of this guidance is to ensure that the cost of school uniforms is reasonable and provides the best value for money.
Key Points of the New Guidance
Affordability: The guidance emphasises the importance of keeping uniform costs manageable. Schools are encouraged to minimise the use of branded items and allow generic alternatives where possible. This means that the uniform should not require expensive branded clothing that can only be purchased from specific suppliers.
At SP, we only ask that children wear a branded sweatshirt or cardigan. Although printed PE tshirts are available in house team colours, these are not compulsory.
Second-Hand Uniforms: Schools are advised to facilitate the availability of second-hand uniforms. This can be achieved through organising second-hand uniform sales or working with local schemes to exchange and provide affordable options for families.
Our wonderful FOSS volunteers hold regular sales of second-hand uniform.
Transparent Policies: Schools must clearly communicate their uniform policies and ensure they are easily accessible. This includes detailing which items are required, which are optional, and where they can be purchased. It’s also suggested that uniform policies should be published on the school’s website.
Uniform guidance is and has always been published on our website.
Consultation with Parents: The guidance encourages schools to consult with families and pupils when developing or revising their uniform policies. This helps ensure that the needs and opinions of the school community are considered.
I have written a new policy and will consult with children and families before asking Governors to ratify it at our meeting. There is an opportunity to discuss the new uniform policy at our upcoming parent forum on Tuesday 29th April. If you would like to attend, please email parent.forum@southill.dorset.sch.uk to request a place.
What Does This Mean for Southill Primary?
At Southill Primary, we are committed to ensuring that our uniform policy aligns with the new guidance. Our new policy does not make any changes to our previous uniform guidance except for a few tweaks to make it more inclusive. I encourage you to participate in the upcoming consultation and share your views on our uniform policy. Your feedback will play a crucial role in shaping a policy that is fair and inclusive for all our pupils.
Thank you for your continued support and cooperation. Together, we can ensure that our school uniform policy not only complies with the new government guidance but also serves the best interests of our pupils and families.
