Parents: all words are selected from the age-appropriate National Curriculum lists, these are words your child has to know by the end of Year 4. Children are being taught strategies for learning spellings as part of their work at school. Use all the strategies to help learn how to spell a word that we have learnt. 1. Look Cover Write Check 2. Bubble writing 3. Draw the shape of the word. 4. The pyramid’. Ask your child to show you how these work. Please encourage them to practice at home during the week, and carry out an occasional test to prepare them for Friday morning.
EXTRA CHALLENGE: spelling rules for adding the suffix -ing to a verb
Look at the last vowel in the verb.
If the vowel is a short sound with only one consonant after it, then you must double the consonant.
eg hit …. hitting
nod …. nodding
If the vowel is a short sound, but has more than one consonant after it then – just add ‘ing’
eg stand … standing
jump … jumping
If the vowel is a long sound, just add ‘ing’
eg sleep … sleeping
float … floating
If the verb it ends in ‘e’ – drop the ‘e’ when adding ‘ing’
eg come … coming
joke … joking
This week’s times tables to learn are:
4 times table . The aim is to answer any 4 times table question within 6 seconds
On Friday after school, please ask your child their score.
