Maths No Problem: Textbook 5B Chapter 11 Measurements.
Lesson 13: Converting units of time.
In Focus: What is the key information in this problem? Do you agree that we need to convert the amount of hours the journey takes into days? What would that look like? What do we need to know? How many hours are there in a day? If we know there are 24 hours in a day, how many hours would there be in 10 days? What about 5 days?
Let’s Learn: I would now use Let’s Learn to follow how to solve the problem. If we know our multiples of 24, we could partition 210 hours so it is easier to calculate the number of days. If we take out 120 hours (5 days) what are we left with? (90 days). What can we partition 90 into? 72 (3 days) and 18 hours so the journey takes a total of 8 days and 18 hours. Would we add 8 or 9 days from the departure date? Tell them that the arrival date might change depending on the month. What does that mean? Wouldn’t the arrival date be the same for each month? Discuss how it depends on how many days there are in each month. Ask what the arrival date would be if the departure dates were the 11th and 25th of May. What do we need to know? How many days are there in May? Count on 9 days, what would the arrival date be?
Guided Practice: During Guided Practice, your child will be converting hours into days. For question 2, ask them if there is more than one possible arrival date. What does it depend on?
Workbook: Please complete worksheet 13, p.123 – 124

Reading: Well done to those of you who are reading widely and completing quizzes, keep reading for at least 20 minutes a day and regularly complete quizzes for the books you have read. If you have a Lexia account, please log on and complete at least 15 minutes a day.
Today I have 2 book buzzes for you! We have a Buzz for Dani’s Diary by Narinder Dhami and I have a Buzz for one of my favourite books from when I was your age, The Dragon Hoard by Tanith Lee:
Hopefully this has inspired you all to film some of your own Book Buzzes and send them in for next week!
Spellings:
Parents, please read out these sentences for your child to write into their journals to test the spellings they have practised this week:
1. We were in mourning for our deceased pet.
2. I enjoy a bowl of cereal for breakfast every morning.
3. The Week Junior is a serial magazine we enjoy in Year 5.
4. I had guessed what would happen at the end of the book and was right.
5. We showed the guest to their room upstairs.
Here are your new words to practice and learn ready for next Friday:
observant
expectant
hesitant
apparent
environment
parliament
Please write them out in some sentences of your own.
Writing:
Yesterday you planned out your information text about your new rare creature. Today, I would like you to write the introductory paragraph to your information text. Remember the sentence starters and brackets we have practiced, remember also our everyday toolkits of capital letters, commas and fullstops!
I will give you time on Monday to complete and edit your information text, so please do not feel you have to complete the whole text today. Write only as much as you would like to after completing your spelling activity.
Topic: History
Well done and thank you to all of you who have sent me your topic work, I am loving seeing your timelines and reading your questions. You are all staying so focused and resourceful it is just great to see!
This week we are thinking about historical events which have happened in Weymouth and Portland.
Have a look at this website page, 10 Top Historical Facts about Weymouth. Have a little read through and see if there is anything there you did not already know!
The Historical Facts are in the wrong date order, so your task is to draw a timeline in your journals and list the events in the correct order.
Now, imagine you could meet someone from any of those events and you have an opportunity to interview them. Which questions would you ask them to find out more about their experiences?!
