Daily Tasks Monday 4th May

Good morning everybody and welcome back after the weekend.  I hope you have all had a lovely one!

Here are your tasks for today:

Maths

Mental Arithmetic: 9x tables.

All this week we will be practising our 9x tables.  Today I would like you to write them out in order from 1 x 9 up to 12 x 9 and practise repeating them out loud.  How quickly can you repeat them in order?!

Please access your TTRockstars account as well, using your Purple Mash logon details and play some games.  Remember, your scores will count towards our whole school competition scores against other local schools this week!

Maths No Problem: Textbook 5B Chapter 11 Measurements.

Lesson 5: Converting units of mass.

In Focus:  Discuss the In Focus task and ask these questions: What do we need to do to answer this question? What have the coins been placed on?   We have to find the mass of the coins. What does ‘mass’ mean? Is it the same as ‘weight’? How do we know this has something to do with weight? Are there any other clues?

Draw attention to the use of the units of measurement: grams and kilograms. What do we know about grams and kilograms? How many grams are in a kilogram? Does it help to know what 100g is in kilograms? Can we work that out? How many times does 100g go into 1 kg? Can we write that as a fraction and as a decimal? What about 10g? How many times does 10g go into 1 kg? Can we write this as a fraction and as a decimal?

If 10g = 0.01 kg, does that help us find 60g in kg? Lead pupils to see that 60g = 0.06 kg. Then ask them if it is possible to work out what 0.6 kg would be in grams.

Let’s Learn:  Use Let’s Learn 1 to show the connection between the units of measurement.  Discuss if it might be helpful if we know what 1 tenth of 1 kg is. What is 1 tenth? Why is it called 1 tenth? Is 1 tenth of a kilogram easy to find? How many tenths are there in 0.6 kg?  Discuss that if 0.1 kg is 100g, 0.6 kg must be 600g.  Discuss if it is possible to work out how many £2 coins would weigh 600g. How can we work this out? Can we find the mass of one £2 coin?

Guided Practice:  Your child will be converting grams to kilograms, reading scales and writing mass in kilograms as decimal numbers.  Use our knowledge of multiplying and dividing by 10 form last week to help here.

Workbook:  Complete worksheet 5, pages 107 – 108

English

Reading:  Your child should try to read for at least 20 minutes every day.  Remember to log on to Accelerated Reader and complete quizzes for all the books you have read!  If you have a Lexia account, try to log on and complete at least 15 minutes a day.

Don’t forget your Book Buzzes Year 5! If you have recently read a book which you would really like to Buzz, send it through to me and I will include it in next week’s Home Learning post!

Writing:  This week we are moving onto a new unit of work called ‘Meet The Rhiswanozebtah’.  This is an information text unit led by our very own explorer looking at unusual creatures he has met on his travels!

“Hi! I’m your explorer and guide, Ted Splorer!  Let’s get started on with our exciting adventure together!
In 1963, Maurice Sendak wrote the picture book ‘Where the Wild Things Are’.  Do you know it?  In the story, Max, on the night he wore his wolf suit, went on a magical journey to the land of the Wild Things and became the king of these strange creatures.  Eventually, he missed home and made the journey back to his bedroom, where it all began. It’s a wonderful story – you can listen to it here and see the wonderful illustrations if you would like to.

In the story, there are many strange creatures that have never been seen before. As an explorer, I discover strange creatures all the time on my travels around the world. I have become expert at looking very carefully for animals as some are very good at hiding.

Here’s a new creature I managed to photograph on my travels to Africa last year. It is the extremely rare Rhiswanozebtah. It is believed to contain DNA from four different animals: rhinos, swans, zebras and cheetahs – which gives it its name.

Now you know it’s a mix of rhino plus swan plus the o of rhino plus the start of zebra and the end of cheetah, you will be able to pronounce it easily!

I have written a paper about it, using my research, to help you find out more about this wonderful animal. Read on and discover the world of the Rhiswanozebtah!”

Your task for today is to read our explorer’s information text here and draw your own storymap for the text.  Then share it with another member of your family!

Topic: History

Well done and thank you to all of you for sending me your map comparisons, they’re great!  Comparing primary historical sources is a key historical skill, so you are well on the way to becoming proficient historians Year 5!

You all did well to estimate the ages of the maps, the dates are as follows:

Map 1 = 1774   Map 2 = 1600’s  Map 3 =Early 1500’s Reign of Henry VIII

This week we will be researching Royalty associated with our town and using some of our artistic skills to represent them.

Please look closely at the pictures of two Kings associated with our town below, King George III and King Henry VIII.

Your first task is to choose one and draw their portrait in your own style in your journals.  The great thing about art is that there is no right or wrong way of doing it, it is completely your own work.

Think carefully about using your pencil to copy the lines, shadows and tone of the image.  Look closely at the clothing and headwear, how do they both differ?

Your second task is to research and write up a little bit of history of your chosen monarch and how they are related to Weymouth.  You could use Google, Wikipedia or The Weymouth Museum websites.  Or try http://www.weymouth-dorset.co.uk/  or  https://www.weymouthandportland.info/local-history

When did they come to our town?  Why did they visit?  What did they do here?  Did they leave a legacy (something that remains)?

Remember not to just copy what you find out, read through and choose only what you feel is relevant to your research!

I would love to see both your pictures and your research, please send anything to me you would like to show me!
