Thursday 7th May
Good morning everyone.
Before you start, please note that there will be no Daily Task set for tomorrow Friday 8th May – V.E. Bank Holiday.
Maths No Problem
1st Answer pages for Wednesday’s Lesson 4
Today’s lesson: Chapter 9 Money Lesson 5 Solving problems involving money
Lesson Objective: To be able to solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of money.
Textbook pages: 72 – 74 Workbook pages 50 – 51
Lesson Notes: To begin this lesson, show pupils the In Focus task. Ask them to discuss the problem and think of a strategy to solve it. What information can we get from the problem? Is there sufficient information to solve the problem? Are there intermediate calculations that need to be done? What would they be?
Work through Let’s Learn to show pupils how to calculate the total. As there are three items, how can we find the total? Prompt them by asking questions, such as: Which total do you think I should find first? Why? What method should I use to add the amounts? Why? Is this the total of all of the items? What should I do next? How much does Elliott have to spend? Does he have enough for all of the items? How do you know? Does he need change from the shopkeeper? How can we calculate the change?
During Guided Practice, pupils are solving problems involving addition and subtraction of money. Before they begin, discuss what is expected and the differences in price between sitting in and taking away.

If you want some more maths to do, or perhaps a break from Maths No Problem, go to the link below. It is by White Rose Maths who have created some video lessons and associated worksheets (+answer sheets) for each year group. It is very good and self-explanatory. Have a look and see what you think.
Mental Maths / Arithmetic
Answers to yesterday questions are:
4.5 + 2.3 = 6.8 6.3 + 2.2 = 8.5 2.13 + 2.11 = 4.24 5.42 + 2.34 =7.76
7.37 + 1.2 = 8.57 3.05 + 2.32 = 5.37 5.3 + 3.33 = 8.63
Today, spend some time on TTRockstars practicing your times tables so that you become automatic at knowing all time table facts.
Writing Task
This week I would like you to continue to write out your own innovated story using the plan that you made last week.
I would like you to continue to write 1 section each day so that you can focus on using the writer’s skills that you practised last week and you can ensure that you have accurate spelling and punctuation.
So today, have a go at writing section 5 – page 21 & 22
If you wrote out the whole story last week then this week I would like you to practise your reading comprehension.
Open this link that will take you to Espresso
https://central.espresso.co.uk/espresso/modules/e2_comprehension_lks2/index.html
You will be asked for a username and password (maybe in another tab)
Username: student10987 Password: southill123
When the link opens, you will see 8 different books. Choose a different one from yesterday, read the extract, take the quiz and answer the further questions.
Spellings
Don’t forget to practice this week’s spellings: experience, experiment, extreme, famous, favourite
Make sure that you know the meaning of each word. Perhaps you could write sentences with the words in.
Reading
Please don’t forget to read today. ‘The more you read, the more you know. The more you know, the more places you will go.’ You should be able to access the book quizzes and don’t forget to go on Lexia (if you have a log in) for 15 minutes each day. Well done everyone.
