Hello Year 5!
As discussed in our email, here are some activities you could complete over the next few weeks. They are not compulsory and you do not have to complete them. You could pick and choose any you would prefer, or do some of each every day!
I have put them together with the intention of keeping your brains engaged in learning, keeping your skills and knowledge fresh and to have some fun while we are still staying safe at home.
As always, I would love to see any photos of anything you have enjoyed and please ask about anything you are unsure of. Please also keep in touch regularly, even to just say ‘hello’ and let me know you are all well and happy!
Reading
ARP: Our current class average of minutes spent reading per day is 17 minutes, however 20 minutes at least is a fantastic time to aim for reading daily. Get those books, get reading and get quizzing Year 5, let’s increase our daily average of minutes read!
Just think, if we stay in isolation for a further 3 months and you read for 20 minutes every day, you could increase your vocabulary by 600,000 words!
Book Buzz – We may not be in class but we can still share our Book Buzzes. If you have read a book which you would love to recommend to us all, please email me your Book Buzz with a picture of the book and I will add it to our class blog.
Maths
Mental Maths:
Here are the answers to Friday’s Mental Maths Challenge: ÷10/÷100
470 ÷10 = 47
50 ÷ 10 = 5
263 ÷ 10 = 26.3
84 ÷ 10 = 8.4
1.9 ÷ 10 = 0.19
520 ÷ 100 = 5.2
387 ÷ 100 = 3.87
406 ÷ 100 = 4.06
25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
7.3 ÷ 100 = 0.073
Maths No Problem
The answers to last week’s work book pages are in the gallery at the bottom of this page.
We have completed our chapter on geometry and over the next few weeks, you have the perfect opportunity to complete the Chapter Consolidation Review 9 on pages 74 – 76 of your workbook.
Feel free to complete the review in a number of stages instead of doing it all in one go if you need to.
I will post the answers to the Review in a couple of weeks.
White Rose Maths
Over the next few weeks, White Rose Maths will be loading daily lessons and activities – all sectioned into Year groups with guides for parents/carers to follow.
I would really recommend this for you if you would like some maths input which is not as structured as our Maths No Problem lessons.

Easter Challenge:
The Uk’s leading chocolate manufacturer, Mega-Chocca-Dooby, had just finished testing their final batch of Easter Eggs when they discovered it has been sabotaged with chilli oil!
Can you follow the clues and solve the mystery to find who was the perpetrator?!
Follow each of the 5 clues in the attached file and let me know if you solve the mystery and find who sabotaged the Easter Eggs! You could do it in stages over the next few weeks instead of in one go and you don’t need to print it off, you could do the working out in your home learning journals.
TT Rockstars
Don’t forget you can access TT rockstars at any time to practise your tables and improve your scores!

Spellings
Remember to keep practising our current spellings: conscience, tolerance, convenience, substance, frequency, vacancy.
I will set some sentences to test them in a couple of weeks.
Writing
Be an author!
Over the next few weeks you have the perfect opportunity to do something I know you all love to do – write and publish your very own story! It could be any genre or theme you choose: adventure, science-fiction, history, horror, mystery…. It could be any type of story you choose: a warning tale, a journey tale, a defeat the monster story…
the list is endless!
Think about planning it first; in paragraphs, note form, following an underlying pattern or in chapters. Remember to edit and correct your story as you go. Then you could publish it in neat, with illustrations!
I would love to see any you finish!
Short Burst Tasks:
I have selected two video tasks for you to choose one, or both! Watch and follow the writing task suggestions underneath.
- Describe the settings in the opening scenes
- Create an internal monologue for the character
- Retell the story (or parts of it) as a narrative
- Write a prequel – what happened before this video
- Design additional futuristic machines – draw diagrams and write explanations
- When the film ends what happens next? Continue the story
- Write news reports of the events in both videos
- Write descriptions of the animals in detail
- Write a plot with a twist, using show don’t tell to describe all the events as if it a human is doing them, then reveal at the end that it is in fact an animal
- Write through the eyes of the giraffes and other animals
- Write a story about a sports event where the competitors are animals
Other Eggciting Ideas!
Technology
I have attached here a large selection of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) cards with lots of Home activities you could carry out to learn more about STEM concepts. They are short, well explained and great fun! Most of them require everyday resources you have at home, but if some of them require resources you might not have, that is ok as there are plenty of others to choose from.
Let me know how you get on with them, I would love to see some photographic evidence of what you discover!
Easter Building Challenge
Can you build a parachute to help an egg land safely to earth without it cracking?!
Use your knowledge of materials and air resistance to design and make a parachute to attach to a bag/egg box carton/yoghurt pot with an egg in it to help it land without breaking.

Kindness Calendar
At Southill we are known for our kindness and generosity towards others. Follow this link to a lovely activity – a Kindness Calendar to download and use to spread kindness over the next few weeks:
Start a diary!
Everything is all very unusual for us at the minute and one way we can help ourselves to deal with all the uncertainty and change is to write out our thoughts regularly.
Keeping a daily diary is a positive way for us to process our thoughts and accept them. A diary is also a great way to keep a record of everything that is happening currently and can be revisited in the future!
