Reading

It is still important to read at home. 10 – 15 minutes each day will continue to make a big difference to your child’s reading. If you would like to swap your books please email Mrs Woods who will arrange this for you.

Her email address is    cwood@southill.dorset.sch.uk

English / Topic

The fact files look amazing – well done! I hope you all enjoyed learing about the classification of animals and writing your true or false questions for your family.

Today we are thinking about Zookeepers. Not all animals that we have learnt about would live in the zoo, but some do. Watch the video below…

Have a go at writing down a list of jobs that the Zookeeper does each day.

Next write 2 sentences about jobs you would like to do and 2 sentences about jobs that you would not like to do. You can do more than 2 if you like. For example…

I would like to be a Zookeeper because I would like spending time with the animals.

I would not like to be a Zookeepr because I don’t like cleaning up poo!!

Maths – Number patterns

Yesterday’s Maths No Problem looked at number patterns. In year 1 we focus on counting in 2’s 5’s and 10’s.

Below are 3 worksheets for each of these, you do not need to print them off they are just there to give you some ideas if you are stuck. Write some missing number sequences for your child to work out – focusing on spotting the patterns. It is important that they are able to spot if the pattern is it going up or down in 2’s 5’s or 10’s and can fill in the gaps.

This is quite tricky, we have been looking at this on and off all year but we still get muddled somtimes especially when the sequence is going down rather than up.

Examples…

0, 2, 4,  __  8, ___ 12, 14

30 ___  20, 15, __ 5, 0  ( we have been finding 5’s the hardest!!)

0, 10, 20, __, __, 50 , 60

If your child is confident going up and down counting in 10s, change the numbers so that the amount is still ten but they are not ‘tens numbers’. For example… 2, 12, 22, 32 , 42… can they ideentify that the ‘tens’ number is going up by one lot of ten each time but the ‘ones’ number is staying the same.

It is also really important that not all of the number sequences start at 0. The children should be able to spot the pattern from anywhere in the number sequence. For example, 10, 12, 14 ___, 18 ___, 22 , 24

2’s 5’s 10’s
