Spellings

Please support your child at home with the spellings below. These should be familiar as they are tricky words which the children have learnt in reception and that we will be recapping throughout week in class.

As with last week we will be using these to see which words we need to focus on further in class.

We will encourage all children to try their best and will be praising their effort not answers. These words will be practiced throughout the year so please do not worry if your child cannot spell them all. You could focus on the first 2 or 3.

If your child is confident spelling these words on their own you can support them at home by asking them to apply the word in a simple sentence.

Maths

This week we have been looking at ordering numbers. This is a really really important skill and throughout year 1 children will focus on being able to count forwards and backwards from 0- 100 starting from any given number.

Today your child has come home with a 100 square. This is a resource that we will be using in class and have started to have a look at.

Please support your child at home but asking them to say the numbers aloud and point to the correct number as they go. Focus on numbers up to 20 initially as the ‘teen’ numbers often get muddled. Once confident starting at 0 and counting up to 20 ask your child to count backwards from 20 -0.

Again, if confident start on a different number. You could ask ‘can you count to 15 starting from 5’. Please encourage your child to point to the corresponding number on their 100 square to ensure they are making links between the number word and how it is written. Talk about how you are counting forwards or backwards. For example, do you notice that when you counting backwards the numbers are getting smaller.
