Friday 3rd April

Spelling/Writing task

Today we would like to find out how well you have learnt your spellings this week.  Grown-ups, please read the following sentences to your child for them to write:

The fire engine zoomed out of the station.
I like to read fiction books.
A quarter is a smaller fraction than a half.
In which direction is the zoo?
The happy boy won the competition!

Please let us know how well you did.

Spellings are not set for practice during school holidays so there are no new words today.  We will have a look at the new words on Monday 20th April. So today please write a book review of a book you have read recently.  Think about including things like who the main characters are, any plot twists and whether (or not) you would recommend this book, giving your reasons.  You could set your review out like this:

Maths task

Today, we would like you to have a look at Lesson 3 – ‘Describing Three Dimensional Shapes’ in the Maths No Problem Textbook. The focus of this lesson is to recognise 2 dimensional shapes on the faces of 3 dimensional shapes.  The textbook suggests making 3D shapes from their nets but we appreciate this may not be possible to do at home. Instead, make a collection of familiar objects and name the 2D shape of the faces, for example a dice or Rubik’s cube has 6 square faces, a tin has 2 circles and one rectangle.

We would then like you to have a go at Worksheet 3 – pages 73, 74 and 75 in the Maths No Problem Workbook.  If pages 73 and 74 prove to be a challenge then please skip to page 75 and also have a go at this instead:

Topic based task

A little history today: watch this video clip about Isambard Kingdom Brunel, a famous mechanical and civil engineer who built bridges, tunnels, railway lines, docks and ships during the industrial revolution.  When you have watched the video choose one of his bridges and either draw or paint a picture of it or make a model of it with construction toys or recycled materials or simply tell your grown up 5 facts you have learnt from the video.
