Reading

Please read with your child every day.  The first time they read their book please help them use phonic skills to decode new words, or recognise words that cannot be decoded.  Help them to understand new vocabulary.  The next time they read their book please help them read fluently with expression.  Finally, please ask questions about the book helping them use the text to answer.

Some children are now ready to take Accelerated Reader Quizzes. If your child has login details in their reading diary this link can be used to access the ARP quizzes.

Please make sure your child really understands the book before they take a quiz and only help them with prompts such as directing them to the text to help them answer questions.

If your child has a Lexia account please use this at home.  Lexia can be accessed using this link:

If you need the teacher email to access Lexia at home please use:  lexia@southill.dorset.sch.uk

Spellings

Next week’s words are:

label
parcel
tunnel
towel
squirrel

These will be tested on Friday 21st April.

Parents: We are now following the year 2 curriculum for spellings.  Many of these words will be in sets with common or alternative spelling patterns.  For the first few weeks our focus is homophones – same sound; different spelling – their meaning and use in context. Other words have more complex or unusual spelling patterns and are on the list of common exception words for year 2. Later, we will be looking at how suffixes are added to the end of root words and how the spelling of the root word might need to change (e.g. ‘drop the ‘e’ add the suffix).  The children are being taught strategies for learning spellings as part of their work at school.  Please encourage them to practice at home during the week and carry out an occasional test to prepare them for Friday morning.  When your children are confident spelling the words please encourage them to use them in sentences.   This will help with understanding and using the words in context.  They could also explore more words with these spelling patterns and bring them to school to share with us.  They will be tested by writing the words in dictated sentences.

Mental Maths

Learn to recite the five times table.

Test: write out the five times table, in order, from 1 x 5 = 5 to 12 x 5 = 60

Topic Challenge

Our next exciting topic will be ‘Magnificent Monarchs’. Here are a few ideas to get you excited for our learning after Easter. Pick one or have a go at them all, it’s over to you:

  • Go for a walk along Weymouth seafront – how many statues or other tributes to British monarchs can you see? Take some photos or draw some pictures to share what you’ve found.
  • Visit Sandsfoot castle to find out which King had the castle built and why. What do we already know about this monarch from our ‘Movers and Shakers’ topic?
  • Name as many British Kings and Queens as you can – who are they and what do you know about them? When did they reign?
  • Find out which King is carved into the hillside at Osmington and why this tribute was created.
