Phonics
Lots of you emailed to say that the online phonics was a success and the children enjoyed it which is great! We will carry on using the videos this week and see how we get on .
Remember, the Year 1 session is at 10.30 am. It can be viewed after at anytime on the Letters and Sounds YouTube channel ( link below) and stays on there so don’t worry if you are a day or so behind the videos are still available.

Reading
It is still important to read at home. 10 – 15 minutes each day will continue to make a big difference to your child’s reading. If you would like to swap your books please email Mrs Wood who will arrange this for you.
Her email address is cwood@southill.dorset.sch.uk
English / Topic
Today we are going to start looking at Animals linking to our new topic ‘Paws, Claws and Whiskers’. We are focusing on the science objective – identifying and classifying.
Look at some familiar animals, such as spiders or dogs. Talk about the similarities and differences between animals, comparing their sizes, colouring, patterns and features. There are some images below that you can use if you would like too, alternatively you can choose you own animals, perhaps you could also look at the pets that you have at home.
What is the same or similar about them? What is different? How can you sort them? Start with simple groups, size, colour. Then move onto more specific grouping such as habitat. This would be a good time to start thinking about what the animals might eat. We will be introducing the vocabulary ; Herbivore, Omnivore and Carnivore at a later date.
There are some vocabulary cards on the first page, you do not need these for sorting, but you might like them to give you a few ideas.
Recording – try drawing different groups in your book. It is up to you how you record this, begin to show your child that information can be recorded in different ways. The key focus is to discuss and sort, so don’t try and record everything! Just a few of your ideas would be great.
Maths – Number bonds to 20
As you are starting something new this week in English I thought I would start the new Maths No Problem chapter in a few days rather than introduce all new learning at once.
Follow the link below. Today’s task focuses on ‘fact families’ linking addition and subtraction. We have looked at this at school, however we would have recapped it this term so please don’t worry if your child needs some extra support. You might like to look at the bar models together first, once you recap the first one I am sure it will all come flooding back!
