Wednesday 25th March – Home Learning
Why hello again…I hope yesterday went well? Remember, some of the learning set yesterday will simply need to continue into today. I have some new and exciting activities ready for Thursday so please try and complete what you can by the end of the day. Finished the activities? No matter! I’ve added extra challenges for each part and included some more activities at the bottom of the page.
Can I stress once again that if you need help with anything please do not hesitate to email me. I am more than happy to help in any way that I can, explain things in a different way or even offer up other suggestions if you want to do more.
Additionally, I would love to see your child’s work, pictures and even videos of their accomplishments so please feel free to email them to me. I would love to see and hear how they are getting on.
As always, stay safe and have fun! 🙂
Reading
Please ensure your children reads daily for at least fifteen minutes. A combination of them reading independently, out loud to an adult and letting them listen to the story being told by the adult is advisable. Simply record any reading in your child’s reading record book. Remember to also quiz your books.
Writing Task – Betty the Skydiving Granny
Watch the following video clip of 96-year old Betty…
Imagine you are Betty. Your task, over the next two days, is to write a diary entry as Betty. Think about what each of your paragraphs might be about, for example:
Diary entry 1- The night before the skydive drinking tea, eating biscuits and watching Corrie!
Diary entry 2- Just after the skydive. How is she feeling?
Diary entry 3- What is Betty planning for her next thrilling adventure…
Remember, diary entries need: chatty language, to be written in the first person (you are Betty), impressive vocabulary, to start with ‘Dear Diary’, to be written mostly in the past tense and describe Betty’s thoughts and feelings throughout.
Hopefully you planned your three diary entries yesterday. Today, proof-read what you wrote with an adult yesterday and then write these paragraphs into your exercise books in your neatest handwriting.
Title- Betty the Skydiving Granny
Extra challenge- If you completed this yesterday, why not come up with a list of fabulous words to describe Betty Hiple:
Title- The Brilliant Betty Hiple
Betty is inspirational
Betty is brave
Betty is _________ etc.
Arithmetic Task- Column Addition
I have listen below some column addition problems for you to solve. Remember to line up the digits carefully, use a ruler (or other straight edge) to help set out your column method. If you need to, feel free to either complete these in the back of you exercise book or even on the back of a speed table grid sheet.

Maths No Problem Task- Time to Tell the Time
Workbook Answers from yesterday- pg.38
Focus on the clock- Once again, recap the basics of telling the time. The small hand points to the hour and the big hand points to the minute. What does AM and PM stand for (before midday and after midday). Ask the children how many minutes are in an hour and what does each small line/dot (increment) stand for on the clock…1 minute. Show them how they can also count round in 5’s.
Using the yellow clock, set a few more questions for the children to do. Repetition is key for telling the time so this would be great to reinforce every day.
Textbook- Flick to page 54 and take a look at the questions set out. Make sure that children understand that the small hand is still on the previous hour until the minute hand has reached 60 minutes (o’clock). Go through the problems together and make sure that the children are also accurate when writing down what the minute hand is pointing to (recap counting in 5’s and 1’s if needed using yellow clock). Look carefully at minutes past and minutes to. The workbook requires them to do both. Top tip- count backwards that many minutes on the clock until you reach the minute hand). You may wish to just do the textbook questions today and record this in their exercise book.
Workbook- If you’re keen to have a go at questions involving minutes past and minutes to then step right up! Pages 39-40 and remember to write your name and the date of completion. Again, parents you are welcome to help so long as you put an s next to each question supported. The first box requires children to write the time digitally (The time is ________) then work out ‘minutes to’ the next hour.
I will post up the answers tomorrow so that you can mark it together 🙂
Topic-based task
Continue creating an Acrostic Poem using the letters MACBETH. You have the rest of the week for this so please take your time and, remember, high-quality sentences. Take a look at some of the sentences you wrote yesterday. Can you improve them?
Adults- remind children about the importance of planning and presentation. Here’s a recap of the Acrostic Poem that I wrote…
Macbeth mischievously murdered King Duncan as he was sleeping…
All of Scotland bowed down to their new king (apart from Malcolm and Macduff of course).
Cackling witches brewed potions on the Heath and told Macbeth of a prophecy.
Banquo remained loyal to Macbeth and his loyalty cost him his life!
Even though Macbeth got away with treason, he began seeing the ghost of Banquo.
The doctor stared in astonishment as Lady Macbeth began having night terrors.
How does the story end? I hear you ask. It ends with Macbeth’s head on a spike!
Encourage children to think of different parts of the play and a range of characters. See if they can think of and use impressive word choices and a wide range of punctuation ? ! … , ( ) –
Challenge- To finish it off, why not do some thumbnail sketches of some of the characters/objects from the play?
- A cauldron
- The face of a witch
- A dagger
- A castle
Smile, you’re on camera- Perhaps mum or dad could even film you performing it? I would love to see it.
