A Bulletin from BOOKFLIX

Hello and welcome to our very first:

As you’d expect – we are BURSTING with news, updates and adventures of all things books and are so pleased to say that this is still very much the case despite our school currently being closed to most pupils.  We’ve had contact from several children’s authors, links to free audiobooks of some our favourite stories, activities and we have even updated many of our Bookflix titles based on new releases, ‘trending at home’ and current interests.

We are REALLY missing hearing all about your latest reads and recommendations, something that we all did so well every day.  Therefore it was just brilliant to see many of you in our recent ‘End of the Week: Cracking Good Reads’ video, thanks for taking part.  We spotted a few trends amongst your pictures and videos, if you haven’t seen it or if you’d like to watch it again (go on!) you can find it HERE.  Watching this video inspired us to keep our beloved Bookflix going the best that we can and it also helped many of us to feel part of our school community again.  We hope you enjoyed it.

Perhaps one of the biggest Bookflix highlights (so far) since we have been partly closed has been the two Cracking Good Reads videos that we managed to record with children’s author Simon Philip, featuring Be More Bernard and I Really Want to Win.  We were so excited to be able to produce these videos and to share them with you all, not only as these are popular stories but also as Simon so very kindly offered his time to read them, a unique opportunity for us to hear a story read by it’s actual author.  We are very grateful to Simon and must also extend our thanks to his publishers Simon and Schuster (Be More Bernard) and Templar Publishing (I Really Want to Win) for allowing us to do so.  These videos can only stay online for a set period of time due to permissions, therefore please enjoy them as much as you can, while you can.  It would be great to know how much you liked them.  Here they are below:

It’s always exciting to receive an email from a children’s author, this week we have had a few!  Below are a selection of stories and activities that we think you may enjoy:

The Book of Hopes edited by Katherine Rundell features contributions from more than 100 children’s writers and illustrators including Lauren Child, Anthony Horowitz, Greg James and Chris Smith, Michael Morpurgo, Liz Pichon, Axel Scheffler, Francesca Simon and Jacqueline Wilson. It’s completely free and packed full with wonderful short stories, poems, essays and pictures.  Take a look and enjoy the content together at home. As always, we’d love to know what you think:

Children’s author Luke Temple has made ‘his most popular book’ Mutating Mansion free to download.  He’s also created a KS2 activity pack entitled ‘Luke Temple’s Writing Toolbox’ containing his own useful tips which he uses to help make his books exciting, fun and ‘scary’ to read.  He would also like to let us know of a writing competition within the activity pack, winners can receive a signed book and a free author visit to their school.  The closing date is 31st May – good luck to anybody wishing to take part (we believe in you!).  All information can be found on his website HERE

You may have seen over on our social media pages a link to a free audiobook provided by Cloudaloud UK of one of our favourite stories The Many Worlds of Albie Bright by Christopher Edge.  Our current Y6 class are very familiar with this story, it was read to them by Mrs Wood last year, after which they went on to read more novels by the same author.  It’s pinned as an ‘extraordinary novel for anyone who’s ever been curious’ and its actually currently on a waiting list for one of our Cracking Good Read videos when we get back.  More info can be found HERE

That’s it for now, we hope that you’ve all found this new BOOKFLIX Bulletin useful, we plan to make it a regular edition to our communications.  Seeing as we are all so good at talking about our latest reads, recommendations and keeping in touch it would be fantastic to include your own content too.  Our Reading Champs have many books that they’d like to share but we are sure that many more of you do too.  If you have anything that you’d like to see included within our next Bulletin; perhaps your latest read, a poster that you have made, a news article or update please do send it over.  Bookflix belongs to us all and sharing is a big part of what ‘Reading for Pleasure’ is all about.  We really miss hearing from you all!

See you all soon, keep in touch and keep reading!
