A Very Victorian Writing Lesson

As you probably know by now, this half term Year 1 are learning about Victorian School days.

We have had great fun learning finding out about Victorian artefacts such as the Dunce cap, slate boards and of course the dreaded cane!! And this week we decided that it was time to put some of the artefacts that we have been learning about to use.

No need to panic, we haven’t bought the cane back just yet!! However, we have experiences a Victorian writing lesson.

We were really excited to use our Victorian style fountain pens and ‘ink wells’. We learnt about how the writing was in ‘cursive’ which looks all curly and joined up! Lots of us were supposed to hear that all children had to write with their right hands, and, if any of the ink smudged they would be in big trouble with their teachers. Even if it was an accident and they were trying their best!

Below you can see us using our pens and copying over some Victorian style writing.

We wore aprons, as the ink is very messy! But we know that didn’t happen back in the Victorian school days.

Another brilliant week –  well done Year 1!

Uh oh, based on the state of their hands, Oscar and Lola would have been in big trouble in Victorian times!! They had great fun having a try though and wanted to work out what relatives attended Victorian school!!!
