This Thursday 5th March is World Book Day, Mrs Wood led today’s assembly by beginning with showing us all the books that can be purchased using special World Book Day tokens. There is a great selection this year, all tokens will be sent home on Thursday.
As we all know – every day is a book day here at Southill Primary! However, to celebrate World Book Day we will be holding a ‘Big Book Sale‘ with cafe (after school) and welcome donations of good quality books all this week. We also have a very exciting ‘Dress a Potato‘ competition, all entries must be brought to school on Thursday when they will be displayed in the hall and judged by our Reading Champions in a special assembly that day. First place (and perhaps second too) will win a book token! Potatoes must be decorated as a favourite or much loved character from a book .. we looked at some brilliant examples to help us with inspiration. Good luck all, but most importantly – have fun!
Mrs Wood then informed us all of some VERY exciting news, which resulted in an accumulative gasp from the whole school … a recent Cracking Good Reads video featuring ‘I Want the Cake’ by Simon Philip was not only seen by the author himself, but he was kind enough to also send us a letter and two of his books (signed!). In his letter, which Mrs Wood read aloud, Simon said that he very much enjoyed our digital book review and that he liked our Bookflix project. He also told us to ‘keep reading, keep working hard and being kind to each other – and you’ll all go far!’ very wise words which we will remember.
Mrs Wood read one of Simon’s books ‘Be More Bernard‘ to us all. This was a story all about a bunny who begins by trying to be like other bunnies, feeling that he needs to fit in and do the same as everybody else. However, he soon discovers that this act is hard to keep up and that really he has different interests. When he finally lets go of pretending and can be himself, he finds his true happiness. We all really enjoyed this story and discussed it’s message and what we could learn from it afterwards:

“Be brave and stand out from the crowd”
“Respect different choices”
Were some of our ideas. We also made links to our British values, particularly ‘tolerance’. This book along with ‘I Really Want to Win’ (both signed copies) have been added to Bookflix, along with this year’s selection of World Book Day titles for all to enjoy.
