After looking at life cycles of animals last week, plants were the talk of town in Year 5 yesterday. We found out the 2 very clever ways that plants reproduce – sexual and asexual. Some plants produce seeds and new plants that are not genetically identical to the parent plant. Bees, insects and butterflies are crucial in passing pollen from one plant to another. Other plants can just grow new identical versions of themselves – they actually create clones of themselves; this is called asexual reproduction. How clever!!
We have set up an investigation to see if we can grow some spring onions in water. We cut off the spring onions and left just roots. We are observing, measuring and writing results down over the next week and will see how our new plants end up. Who will produce the biggest plant?
Today, some caring members of the class noticed a rather dazed and confused bee in the cloakroom. Now realising how important bees are to nature, they acted quickly to help the poor bee. Mrs Butler gave the bee some sugared water and the caring individuals gave up their lunchtime to be on ‘bee watch’ The story has a happy ending – after some nourishment and a rest, the bee was ready to go off and pollinate some more plants and help nature create some more seeds and plants!! Great news!
I love our new topic as i love being outdoors a lot!!!
