Destination: Space!

Wow Year 5!  What a fantastic day we have had exploring and learning at Winchester Science Museum!

In our first workshop we heard about the Webb telescope; a deep space exploratory telescope made in Britain which will be launching in December this year!

We looked at the Electromagnetic spectrum of light and how we can best use materials to protect the Webb telescope against the harm and heat of infrared light from the Sun.  We also had great fun playing with lazers and creating mazes to help the lazer light pass along a given route.

Our next acvtivity was to explore the exhibits at the museum based on aspects of physics, biology and chemistry.  We looked at viscosity, sound, air pressure, pivots and loads, sound waves, under the sea and gravity, to name a few!

Then we explored the Space exhibits at the museum and looked at thermal imagery, the planets, optical illusions and much more.

Our final visit was to the Planetarium and this was phenomenal.  We studied the constellations, travelled to all of the planets in our Solar System and then looked at the Milky Way and the Universe beyond.  It was amazing to see everything up close and in so much detail, we thought we were actually there!

Thank you to all staff who came with us, making this trip possible and ensuring we had the best day.

And well done Year 5, you were a credit to the school and yourselves today and we are really proud of you all.  You astounded us with your knowledge, vocabulary, listening and interraction with everything the museum had on offer.  You behaved exceptionally well, got involved in absolutely everything and learnt so much.

Have a look and see for yourselves what a brilliant time we have had!
