In Year 5 this week, we are really enjoying our latest Art project – Expressionism. This style of art explores different ways to portray feelings and emotions through portraiture.
After first experimenting with creating different facial expressions in our art, we then studied an artist who is believed to be ‘The Father of Expressionism’ – Edvard Munch. His most famous painting, ‘The Scream’ shows his experience of a blood curdling scream on a peaceful tranquil evening.
This painting really taught us how colour, brushstrokes and expression can portray emotions, feelings and experiences for the viewer.
We spent a lovely afternoon exploring other expressionist paintings in more detail and were so resilient in creating palettes to match the colours in each painting then associating vocabulary to describe the feelings we felt from each.
Finally this week, we have explored our own use of colour and vocabulary to overlay text onto an image and express a feeling through the use of portraits. I was so impressed with the resourceful use of language to link vocabulary to the arts, well done Year 5, an amazing session!
