Our study of Expressionism as a form of portraiture in Arts Week resulted in some amazing self-portraits in Year 5 today! We have studied the works of Alexei Jawlensky, a German Expressionist painter who specialised in colourful portraits showing clear facial expressions. We were really impressed by the contrast of his bright colours yet subtle backgrounds and clearly defined black outlines. After exploring our own facial expressions and choosing a favourite to replicate, we worked on showing emotion with different eyebrow, lips and cheek positions. We then drew out our self portrait and clearly defined and outlined our features in black pen. Working diligently and resiliently, we then used blocks of bold colour to fill in our facial features. Jawlensky never left any white on his portraits so we also made sure we painted right up to the lines and each colour. We all enjoyed the opportunity to be creative with colour, expression and design and have painted some amazing self portraits, well done Year 5!
