This week we have continued learning about the Great British Weather!
We have been looking at extreme weather that we might experience in our country – focusing specifically on flash floods. We have watched some videos of the floods, talked about how this could effect people and their homes and why we think these floods happen. We have used our facts to create a class story map, which we have then used to support our writing. You can see some pictures below of the amazing pieces of writing that we have been working on over the past few days.
The weather fun doesn’t stop there, oh no!! On Thursday afternoons we are really lucky to have Mr Bell ( class TA and brilliant musician) working with us. During these afternoons he has been leading our music lessons. We have been listening to different instruments, linking them with different types of weather and having a go at creating our own weather music using a range of different instruments in small groups. We have also learnt some simple call and response games that help us learn about rhythm and beat.
In maths we have been busy learning how to use a ‘Tens frame’. This is just one of many different ways which we can represent numbers and we will be using them a lot over the academic year. We have been practicing representing numbers up to ten this week, starting in the correct place and making sure we are filing up the top row of five first. This is a really important skill, as the year progresses children should be able to see which number is represented just by looking. We have been playing some ‘tens frame games’ with our partners and completing some of the questions in our brand new Maths No Problem workbooks!!
WOW! What a busy week.
Well done Year 1… I wonder what next week will bring?
