Forest School Session 4. Potions and pancakes

It was lovely to be sat back around the fire circle and be in the woodland after last week’s wind.

We began with a nature scavenger hunt where the Forest Schooler needed to collect certain items from nature, but they only had a 30 second window to see the items before they were hidden away, out of sight.  They did brilliantly and most pairs managed to find all 6 items – excellent memory, team work and resilience.

Then we heard a story about Blackberry.  She  makes potions for the sick animals in the woodlands and we decided to help her.  We collected natural ingredients to put in our potions.   Vibrant colours were a hit and we created our special potions and got to really squeeze out the colours our of the ingredients using a pestle and mortar.  Some potions had a lovely aroma of lavender.

The children listened really carefully and learnt how to stay safe on a slack line and were amazing at supporting and helping one another as they wobbled their way across.  Dragonfly nymphs, pond skaters and pond snails were caught at our pond.

Two Forest Schooler eagerly read one of the activity ideas in free play, and decided to make a den for the animals that might need one of our potions to help them get better.  Everyone spontaneously joined in and worked as a team to create a lovely den complete with a feather pillow for any sick animals that might visit.  Potions were left out for the animals.

Finally, we foraged some blackberries to have with our dairy free pancakes.   There weren’t many blackberries left, but we all managed to eat a few, squashed inside our pancakes, like a wrap or taco!  All of the pancakes were devoured; they were clearly a hit.

What a busy week!  We will meet again next week on Thursday, as it is Harvest Assembly for Year 1 & 2 on Wednesday.  The children would like to learn about making fires next week…watch this space!
