To kick start our ‘Darwin’s Delights’ topic, Year 6 were given the opportunity to explore lots of different fossils that have been found all along the Jurassic Coast.
They carefully looked at the details of each fossil and we read some information on where each one was found. The class were shocked to hear that some of the artefacts dated back to 190 million years ago! We learnt how fossils are formed and why they are often found along the coast. The class also shared some of their own fascinating fossil facts.
We then spent the second part of the afternoon creating observational sketches of some of the ammonite fossils. Inspired by Darwin’s observational fossil sketches, the children used black ink pens to create their drawings. They took great care to focus on the different details of each ammonite, and they used fine lines to recreate these details.
They all worked incredibly hard and each created some fantastic observational sketches.
Thank you to Charmouth Heritage Centre for allowing us to borrow the fossils for our lessons this week.
