Let’s Investigate Volume!
Year Three began a new chapter in Maths No Problem today all about volume! In case you were wondering, volume equals the amount of liquid in a container. The children knew that we measured volume in millilitres and litres.
The children were then set the task of predicting which container had the most liquid in (see picture below).
This prompted a lot of mathematical discussion and the children really did think of everything!
“This container is wider, however this one is taller.”
“I think this container can hold more liquid because it is a lot wider.”
“It’s got to be this one. Mr Prior is trying to trick us!”
I was majorly impressed with how the children reasoned with one another. In the end, we found out that, despite one container being taller and one being wider, they both had the same volume of water – 900ml! “Maths can be mad at times.” chortled one member of the class.
Well done everybody. Tomorrow, we will look at reading measuring scales (even if they go up in different increments).
Me and Isabelle thought they would be the same amount of water and we were both right
