London Tourists

As part of our Bright Lights Big City we have been learning lots about Geography.

We have learnt about The United Kingdom, its Countries and their Capital Cities – focusing more specifically on London and what a capital city is. We have also been looking at Human and Physical features of the landscape, focusing on landmarks and linking physical features to our surroundings here in Weymouth.

This week have been been finding out about Tourisms and what it means to be a tourist. We used the computers to research some attractions and events in London that tourists might visit and started to make a list of things that we would like to Visit if we were going to London! We talked about how these tourist attractions can be Human or Physical features and used maps to to discus were they were in London. Using directional language such as; near, far, next too etc. We even started to look at directions such as North and South!

Using the Chromebooks to research was very exiting!

We all had to log on, which was a bit tricky but we didn’t give up! Next we searched for a website called Visit London. At the beginning of the lesson we talked about staying safe online. We discussed the importance of visiting known websites and asking for adult support if we are unsure or unable to do this. The children were really sensible and all remembered the key message – if you see anything at all that you are unsure about or feel uncomfortable with close the lid of your Chromebook, do not turn it off, and tell and adult straight away.  This is great – well done Year 1!

Below you can see us using the Chromebooks, visiting the website and even viewing little snippets of different musicals that you can see in the West End! It was all very exciting!
