Over the past few weeks in year 1 we have been having lots of fun learning all about different types of measurement and directions.
We started off learning about money, recognizing coins and talking about their values before moving onto making different amounts using different coin combinations. A huge thankyou to all of the parents who supported with this at home, it made a big difference. To finish off our money learning we set up a little sweet shop in the school library. Each child was given 20p and they had to decide which sweets they would like to buy. We went into the library first to look at the sweets and their prices before coming back and working out which combination of sweets that we wanted to buy. We had a great time and it was lovely to see everyone so excited working out how many of each sweet they could have and how much money they had left! A very important life skill.
This week we have been looking at position and direction. We have been using our spoons to explore ‘turning’, focusing specifically on quarter turn, half turn, three quarter turn and full turn. We have learnt that he most important thing to look out for is the objects ‘start’ and ‘finish’ position. As this gives us a starting to point in which to turn from. We know that if the start and finish are the same, the object must have made a full turn!
Below you can see lots of pictures of our maths learning over the past few weeeks.
Enjoy!
I liked learning about money and I especially liked the sweetie shop. Yum yum! Thank you Miss Curtis and Mrs Jones.
