Marvelling at Mountains
Over the past few weeks, we have been focusing on the features of rivers. We’ve looked at local rivers, rivers from around the world and learnt about how they change the landscape. Today we began the second half of our topic as we began to look at mountains. To begin with, children were tasked with labelling a mountain and, using books and online sources, they were required to explain what a mountain was and the different types of mountain you might find on Earth.
The children were fascinated! Here are just a few of the facts we’ve learnt about mountains on our very first lesson:
-The top of the mountain is called the peak (or summit)
-They are only classified as mountains if they are over 610 metres high
-There are five types of mountain: Plateau, Fold, Dome, Volcanic and Fault-Block
-Sir Edmund Hillary was the very first person to climb Mount Everest
It was great seeing the children being independent learners and taking real pride of their work. Well done, Year 4. A great afternoon.
