Mastering Monochrome: Year 5’s Artistic Adventure
We’ve had an incredible time in our art lessons over the past few weeks, diving into the fascinating world of monochromatic techniques. Using just one color and its varying shades, we’ve explored a range of artistic styles, from realistic to abstract, while developing our skills and creativity in our sketchbooks.
The children have loved defining and describing their own unique styles of art. They’ve confidently demonstrated how to use shape and value to create depth and form in their drawings. One of the highlights has been discovering the magic of different types of pencils—experimenting with how they affect shading, tone, and texture has been a huge hit!
Our activities have ranged from creating simple pictures in various styles to mastering techniques like shading, tone, and crosshatching. One of the most exciting lessons was exploring Allison Kunath’s geometric animal art. The children were captivated by learning how to imprint an animal silhouette into their sketchbooks and then filling it with intricate geometric designs. Using 2D shapes and diagonal lines, they created stunning three-dimensional effects that brought their artwork to life.
It’s clear we have some incredibly talented artists in Year 5, and we can’t wait to see how their creativity continues to grow!
