Year 6 have been learning all about units of measure this week in Maths. We started by exploring the three different groups of measure:
- length
- mass
- capacity
We learnt which units of measure belonged to each group and had a go at using our knowledge to estimate the length, mass or capacity of certain objects, this including the length of the classroom which we then measured to see how accurate our estimations were!
We spent lots of time learning how to convert between metric units of measure by using the following key knowledge:
- 10mm = 1cm
- 100cm = 1m
- 1,000m = 1km
- 1,000g = 1kg
- 1,000ml – 1L
We had to use our knowledge of multiplying and dividing integers and decimals by 10, 100 and 1,000 in order to answer questions accurately.
Finally, we moved onto something a bit more tricky… converting between metric and imperial units of measure! This required the class to be very resilient and resourceful as some of the conversions were a bit more challenging. For example, there is roughly 2.5cm in 1inch and 3 miles is roughly 5km.
The class worked brilliantly as they tackled some difficult problem solving questions and we were really impressed with their resilience as well as being extremely resourceful. Well done Year 6!
