Mental Health Awareness Week – MOVEMENT

Today marks the start of ๐Œ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ฅ ๐‡๐ž๐š๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก ๐€๐ฐ๐š๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐–๐ž๐ž๐ค, the biggest opportunity for the whole of the UK to come together to focus on getting good mental health. The theme this year is โ€˜๐˜”๐˜ฐ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ตโ€™, recognising the huge benefits being physically active can bring to not just our bodies, but our minds too. Even as little as half an hour of daily exercise can make a big difference to how we feel.

We embrace many ways of keeping active here at Southill Primary, our pupils enjoy a wide variety of activities often led by our own team of Bronze Ambassadors who help to plan and host several elements of our curriculum. Our Daily Mile acts as a handy go-to activity to refresh and recharge, along with our purpose-built play equipment including climbing frames with physical age-appropriate challenges and our terrific PE curriculum of course. We also enjoy sporting clubs, Fitness Thursdays and our Bike Bus too of course.

As a school we are dedicated to building childrenโ€™s resilience and nurturing their wellbeing and mental health. As part of this commitment, classes take part in โ€˜Stormbreakโ€™ sessions which help to develop this aspect of our wider curriculum. These daily sessions are designed to improve childrenโ€™s mental health through movement and are also great fun! The ultimate aim is that through working with Stormbreak, we are able to equip children with sustainable, transferable skills and coping strategies to thrive during the complex demands of growth into adult life.

Stormbreak activities link to several key concepts – resilience, self care, relationships, self-worth and hope and optimism and teachers are able to choose and tailor sessions to suit their classes. This week, weโ€™ll focus on the theme of movement.

Feel free to ask any of us for tips and tricks on looking after your mind. Weโ€™re Wellbeing Wizards and weโ€™re also experts at having a positive mindset too!
