Museum of East Dorset

We set off first thing this morning, excited about our journey on a coach to visit the Museum of East Dorset in Wimborne.

During the day we rotated around four different activities: making peg dolls, exploring traditional toys, playing traditional games and a gingerbread storytelling session, complete with decorating our own gingerbread man biscuits.

Here we are colouring, cutting, sticking and decorating our peg dolls.

We listened to a very interesting talk about how toys have changed, especially what they are made from. We saw wooden boats, spinning tops, cars and dolls. The doll was made from different materials, including china and wax. Unfortunately it had a broken leg!

We had so much fun playing some traditional games, including cards in a hat, marbles in a tin, hoopla, croquet and flapping feathers!

Listening to the story of the Gingerbread Man took place in the Victorian kitchen, where we also iced our very own gingerbread characters! We had to wash our hands in the sink outside.

It was such an amazing day, finding out about things from the past, enjoying stories and decorating biscuits. All of this took place in such beautiful surroundings too.

Many thanks to all of the adults who came to help us today – Mrs Kench, Mrs Murray, Lucy, Arthur’s Mum, Ezra’s Mum, Parker’s Dad and Esme’s Mum. Our thanks also to the amazing volunteers at the museum.
