Congratulations to a pupil in Year 6 who has won top prize in a national poetry competition. All of Year 6 entered their poems about nature into a competition run by The Children’s Bookshow who organise lots of fantastic booky events for children all over the country.

Excitingly, we had a phonecall this week to tell us that a pupil from our school has won first prize! His amazing prize is a 2-day trip to London with travel and hotel all paid for. The lucky winner will meet Michael Rosen at The National Poetry Library and bring home lots of signed poetry books as well as £200 brand new books for our library.

Judges praised the “outstandingly good entry” with his “sophisticated use of language.” Children’s poet Rachel Rooney, who judged the competition, said “Packed with evocative imagery, this haunting poem is a pleasure to read aloud. It has a strong ‘call and response’ structure and uses well-crafted rhythm and rhymes. The descriptions of the owl within its natural habitat are original and atmospheric. And the mystical relationship between bird and human is deftly explored.”

The winner,who is one of our Reading Champions, said “I really wasn’t expecting to win something this big and I’m so excited to visit London for the first time. I’m looking forward to meeting Michael Rosen because he inspires me with poetry. In fact, he’s the main reason I’m interested in it.”
