This week, Year 6 introduced to their new topic ‘Frozen Kingdoms’ by taking part in a virtual polar expedition. We located the two polar regions on a map and then used Google Earth to explore the physical and human features of each location. We used satellite imagery and the ‘street view’ tool to travel around and make observations based on what we saw. Some children were even lucky enough to come across some penguins in the Antarctic!
We then used our observations from the virtual expedition to help us learn about the climate in the Arctic and Antarctic. We learnt that a climate zone is where that are similar weather patterns across different parts of the world. Then, we compared the similarities and differences between the climates in the Arctic and Antarctica. We discovered that parts of theĀ Arctic and Antarctic can be classed as deserts due to both places receiving such a small amount of rainfall each year.
It was also lovely to see some of the home learning the pupils created over the holidays based on our new topic. Well done, Year 6. A great first week back!
