What a brilliant day we have had here at Southill Primary to celebrate World Book Day! Today began just like any other – children arriving with talk of their latest Bookflix borrow, some even with books from home that they’d like to share, however today was a day with a difference as many of us also had a potato! Not just any potato …
Firstly, we must begin by expressing just how thrilled we were to receive so many entries to our Dress a Potato competition; 156 spectacular spuds in total which formed a great gang of book characters on display in our hall. This also however made the task of judging fairly difficult for our Reading Champions, who needed a little extra time to consider their choices! In fact, this task was so tricky that eventually they decided on four winning entries – double the amount than we had originally planned to choose. This was mainly due to the high standards of all our creations, the wide range of characters and having just so many to look at and enjoy.
Well done to everybody who took the time and care to decorate a potato at home, you all did amazingly well and we hope that you had fun in the process. We had planned to award all our entries with a certificate to take home, however there were just too many to print and we need to be conscious of the environment, so here is a digital certificate especially for you all:
Of course, with any competition there has to be winners. Well done to our four entries spread across Rec, KS1 and KS2 who our Reading Champions chose as their overall favourites. During a special assembly they each received a ticket which will be exchanged for a book token, we hope that you enjoy whichever book you choose to buy (we always love to hear about what you’re reading, so do let us know!)
The fun didn’t stop there though as FOSS had organised a BIG book sale with cafe straight from school, an ideal way to end a brilliant book day! Thank you to all those who donated books, cakes and who came to support our event. We also hope that you enjoyed having a look at all our potatoes that we kept on display to enjoy.
Below is a small selection of just some of our entries, many of which received a special mention in our assembly today:
